Ocean Network Express: Collaboration and flexibility key for 2026
How are shipping lines preparing for the year ahead? APM Terminals Gothenburg spoke with Mattias Järlestig, Director Scandinavia at Ocean Network Express, about the opportunities and challenges the shipping industry faces in 2026, and how the company is preparing for the year ahead.
What are you most optimistic about – and most concerned about?
We are in the middle of an ambitious growth plan with several exciting initiatives for Scandinavia. As we are not one of the largest shipping lines, it is important for us to find the right partnerships where all parties can create profitability.
The biggest challenge right now is managing profitability, as the market still has overcapacity. A rapid return to normal Suez traffic could further worsen that situation.
Which issues and priorities are highest on your agenda in 2026?
Sustainability remains high on our agenda, while we are also investing in new systems. The rapid development within AI is exciting, particularly as we are developing a new production system. At the same time, we have a strong focus on cost efficiency to ensure that we remain competitive.
What do you value most in a port or terminal partner today, and what is important for long-term cooperation going forward?
Flexibility and communication are crucial. When everyone in the value chain is involved in the solutions, we can ensure that Sweden maintains its competitiveness in the global market.
