APM Terminals Quetzal expands yard capacity to support faster, more reliable cargo flows
APM Terminals Quetzal in Guatemala has completed an US$8 million (approximately GTQ40 million) yard expansion and RTG equiptment, an investment made last year to strengthen cargo flow through Guatemala’s main Pacific container gateway. The project increases yard capacity and enhances reliability for customers moving higher volumes through the terminal.
Meeting rising demands
The investment shows APM Terminals’ commitment to Guatemalan trade as a response to clear shifts in customer demand. Larger vessels are calling at fewer ports, placing pressure on terminals to deliver consistent productivity. At the same time, cargo owners expect tighter transit times and fewer delays across their supply chains. Growing containerized trade through Puerto Quetzal has made additional yard space and smarter yard design essential to support long‑term growth.
The upgrade focused on RTG yard blocks A5 and A6, which have been constructed to create high‑efficiency storage areas. The new layout and equipment improve stacking logic and increase usable capacity within the existing footprint. Containers can be handled with fewer unproductive moves, with clearer separation of import, export and transshipment cargo. This redesign enhances yard fluidiy and improves the ability of operations teams to adapt to changing vessel and truck flows.
Faster, more predictable logistics
For customers, these changes translate into a more predictable service. Shipping lines benefit from more stable berth windows and better support for schedule recovery, helped by reduced yard congestion and improved equipment availability. Trucking companies and cargo owners should experience shorter waiting times and faster gate‑to‑yard movements, supported by clearer visibility of container readiness. Together, these improvements help reduce logistics costs and strengthen overall supply chain reliability.
Multiple sectors benefit too. Exporters of agricultural goods, food products and manufactured items depend on fast, reliable cargo flows to protect product quality and meet delivery commitments in global markets. Increased capacity and more efficient handling offer extra protection during seasonal peaks and sudden shifts in demand. Importers supplying the domestic market gain from smoother terminal processes that support better inventory and distribution planning.
Stronger performance across markets
Performance indicators are expected to rise as the upgraded yard becomes part of daily operations. Higher yard productivity, fewer container re‑handles and better equipment utilisation contribute to more stable, predictable performance. Truck turnaround times are expected to fall as retrieval processes become more direct.
As these efficiencies take hold, overall operational reliability continues to strengthen, giving customers greater confidence in the terminal’s ability to support their growth.
Building a future-ready Pacific hub
The expansion forms part of a wider development roadmap for APM Terminals Quetzal. Infrastructure upgrades, equipment renewal and systems improvements are aligned to support future demand and ensure that capacity, technology and customer service evolve with the needs of shipping lines and cargo owners across Guatemala’s Pacific coast.
