The Tanger Med port complex was constructed on a central artery of global shipping; over 200 vessels a day pass through the Straits of Gibraltar as they carry trade between Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. The Tangier-Med Phase I container terminal is owned and operated by APM Terminals and the Moroccan Akwa Group, and opened in July of 2007. Primarily a transshipment hub at present, APM Terminals Tangier-Med is one of two container facilities at the new port development which is projected to become the largest port in Africa.

A deep water port handling the largest Container vessels in service and with minimum deviation from the Major Shipping Lanes supported by high levels of consistent productivity, APM Terminals Tangier is positioned to deliver.

Gateway cargo to the hinterland is now permissible either via feeder or by rail/road directly from the Container terminal to all major destinations such as Casablanca, Rabat and others.

In 2009, APM Terminals Tangier was awarded with the Highest Safety Honor within Morocco (Prix National de la Securite au travail).

Total throughput in 2010 was 901 500 moves / 1.35 mio TEU`s.
