Algeciras Terminal Reports Record Volumes

APM Terminals Algeciras hit a new high in 2018 as it handled a total of 217,000 gate moves – achieving its highest volume ever in the terminal history. The record figure translates to a 21 percent increase in number of gate moves compared to the previous year.

While the Algeciras terminal has seen an upward trajectory in container handling for years now, it was in 2016 when the transhipment hub started making headway with the installation of the automatic gate.

APM Terminals Algeciras Chief Operations Officer Jesus Caceres explains, “We are thrilled to have accomplished a new record for APM Terminals Algeciras. The automatic gate is an essential tool in our strategic initiative to improve gate services. By leveraging innovation and our excellent network, we now operate with better flexibility and reliability, moving more goods for customers in a faster and more cost-effective manner.”

Located on the Strait of Gibraltar, APM Terminals Algeciras is one of the largest terminals in the Western Mediterranean and provides a natural transhipment location for cargoes to and from Africa, Europe, and the Far East. 

With an impressive track record of safety, efficiency, and productivity, APM Terminals Algeciras is well-appointed to serve ultra-large container vessels of over 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units, with a throughput of 2.25 million containers in 2018. 

According to terminal management, more can be done to improve efficiencies and further growth at the Algeciras terminal to attract more customers – particularly landside customers – by realising the synergies within Maersk brands.
