Parliamentary Labor Committee Visits Aqaba Container Terminal: "A Leading Success Story"

As part of its commitment to overseeing key strategic projects across the Kingdom, the Parliamentary Labor Committee visited Aqaba Container Terminal today. During the visit, the committee examined ACT’s comprehensive strategic plan and was welcomed by the terminal’s senior management team.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Labor Committee, MP Moataz Abu Rumman, emphasized that Aqaba Container Terminal represents a genuine success story, operating according to international best practices through its strategic partnership with global operators APM Terminals and the Aqaba Development Corporation. Abu Rumman noted that the terminal’s impressive handling of 92,000 containers in May alone clearly demonstrates its success, enabling ACT to achieve a total annual handling capacity of up to 1.3 million TEUs.

During the meeting, the committee underscored the importance of establishing an integrated logistics zone adjacent to the terminal, consolidating all regulatory, inspection, and clearance agencies. Such a zone would significantly enhance efficiency, expedite cargo clearance, and strengthen ACT’s competitive position to attract a larger proportion of transit containers intended for neighboring countries. The committee acknowledged ACT’s strong capacity to manage increased volumes effectively and efficiently.

Committee Rapporteur, MP Arwa Al-Hajaya, recommended allocating a portion of the company’s corporate social responsibility fund specifically for scholarships benefiting students from underprivileged families residing within the company's service areas, ensuring that aid reaches those most in need. ACT management welcomed this recommendation, which aligns with its current community support initiatives.

MP Dr. Lubna Al Namour affirmed that ACT represents an outstanding success story, praising the terminal’s impactful community services and employee welfare programs, which reflect positively on Aqaba as a whole.

On its part, ACT’s Chief Financial Officer, Baudyn Boersma, reiterated that the terminal adheres to international best practices and stressed that the extension of the concession agreement to 2046 will directly support the ACT’s investment goals, workforce development plans, and broader community development programs.

MP Moataz Abu Rumman concluded by stating that Jordan is poised for economic revitalization, with the development of Aqaba playing a pivotal role in supporting neighboring countries, especially Syria. He further emphasized that the achievements of Aqaba Container Terminal embody the visionary Leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II.
