APM Terminals launches next phase of expansion in Callao

· Stage 3B will be delivered in two phases over the next four years, without disrupting current operations, with an investment of USD 570 million.

· The works will increase North Terminal capacity to 1.75 million containers annually and 18 million tonnes of general cargo per year.

On 26 June, construction began on Stage 3B of the modernization of Callao’s North Terminal. This phase represents an investment of approximately USD 570 million by APM Terminals Callao and will significantly expand the operational capacity of Peru’s first multipurpose terminal.

“The works will be carried out in two phases, each lasting two years, to manage impacts and ensure continuity of operations and service to customers,” said José Carlos Maia, Projects Director at APM Terminals Callao. “Completion is scheduled for 2030, and we expect to increase annual capacity from 1.3 million to 1.75 million containers and from 13.5 million to 18 million tonnes for general cargo,” he added.

The first phase – running from 2026 to 2028 – will focus primarily on expanding container infrastructure. Upgrades include the construction of a new Berth 5C, enabling the terminal to handle Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs), the installation of three next-generation Malaccamax cranes – the largest on the market – and the purchase of additional container-handling equipment.

Phase one will also include the implementation of a new gate for general cargo. The new gate will double capacity to 16 lanes and improve cargo flow.

The second phase (2028–2030) will focus on further expanding general cargo capabilities. Phase two expansion will include the construction of three new berths.

This modernization will enable the North Terminal to receive larger, deeper-draft vessels. As global shipping scales up, this drives greater logistics efficiency by reducing transport costs. Greater efficiency benefits importers, exporters and end consumers.

Stage 3B reflects APM Terminals’ ongoing commitment – as a strategic partner to the Peruvian State – to advance port infrastructure and respond to growing market demand.
