APM Terminals Callao welcomes the Maersk Tokyo, first methanol-ready container vessel to call at Peru

Biomethanol and e-methanol can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% to 95% over their lifecycle compared with conventional fossil fuels, depending on the feedstock used and production pathway.

APM Terminals Callao welcomed the Maersk Tokyo, the first methanol-ready container vessel to call at Peru. The vessel is undertaking one of its first voyages after being delivered in June this year and represents a new generation of ships designed to support the maritime industry's transition toward lower-emission operations.

The Maersk Tokyo has a capacity of 8,928 TEU and is equipped with a MAN B&W main engine featuring dual-fuel technology, capable of operating on conventional marine fuels or methanol. This flexibility allows alternative fuels to be incorporated progressively as their availability and the necessary infrastructure develop across different trade routes.

The use of reduced-emission methanol, such as biomethanol or e-methanol, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% to 95% over the fuel's life cycle compared with conventional fossil fuels, according to Maersk estimates. The result depends on the feedstock and the process used to produce the methanol.

These characteristics make it a strategic vessel for connecting different industries with international markets, from agro-industrial exports requiring cold-chain logistics to the movement of minerals.

Dual-fuel vessels are one component of Maersk's broader decarbonization strategy, which supports the company's ambition to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its business by 2040.The arrival of the Maersk Tokyo is aligned with APM Terminals Callao's ongoing efforts to modernize infrastructure, electrify equipment where appropriate, and improve operational efficiency across terminal operations.

As shipping lines introduce vessels designed to use alternative fuels, port operators are advancing the modernization of infrastructure and improving the efficiency of vessel and cargo handling.
