APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas to Become the First Terminal in Mexico to Operate with 100% Renewable Electricity

  • The supply of renewable electricity for the Lázaro Cárdenas container terminal will prevent the annual emission of approximately 6,500 tons of CO₂.

APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas container terminal has signed an electricity supply agreement with Iberdrola Mexico, which will enter into operation in the third quarter of 2026, making this facility the first in the country to operate with 100% renewable electricity. Under this agreement, 95% of the container terminal’s electricity consumption will be supplied through the contract, while the remaining 5% will be sourced from on-site solar panels that will be commissioned shortly, as part of the company’s global decarbonization strategy.

“The signing of this electricity supply agreement not only represents a very significant step forward in our decarbonization objectives, but it also makes us the first terminal in Mexico to operate with 100% renewable electricity — a distinction that is even more meaningful given that our entire automated yard and some major equipment, such as cranes, are also 100% electric,” said Beatriz Yera, Managing Director of APM Terminals Mexico.

The agreement includes the acquisition of GDOs (Guarantees of Origin), an instrument that allows APM Terminals to certify the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by ensuring full traceability that the electricity supply comes from renewable sources linked to Iberdrola Mexico’s renewable power plants.

The supply of renewable electricity for the Lázaro Cárdenas container terminal will prevent the annual emission of approximately 6,500 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) into the atmosphere.

These actions reflect APM Terminals Mexico’s commitment to environmental stewardship and represent another step toward the company’s global goal of leading decarbonization in the terminal industry by accelerating electrification, to enable more sustainable global trade.
