APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, Cordeel, and AECOM sign cooperation agreement for sustainable terminal expansion

APM Terminals Maasvlakte II, together with Cordeel Nederland and AECOM, reached an important milestone today with the signing of a cooperation agreement for the expansion of one of Europe's most advanced container terminals. The ceremony at the terminal marks the official start of an integrated construction project aimed at increasing capacity, optimizing operations, and developing an emissionfree terminal. The first phase of the expansion is expected to be completed in early March 2026.

Design & Build: integrated approach to sustainability

The collaboration is laid down in a Design & Build agreement, signed by Harold Kunst, CEO of APM Terminals Maasvlakte II. Under this agreement, Cordeel Nederland is responsible for the technical design and construction of various building components, while AECOM provides expertise in project management and sustainable infrastructure development. The design was developed in close collaboration with terminal stakeholders, elaborated by Haskoning, and supervised by Arcadis during the permitting process.

This multidisciplinary approach ensures a future-proof expansion that aligns with the terminal's operational and strategic ambitions.

Expansion with an eye to the future

The expansion supports APM Terminals' ambition to achieve completely emission-free operations. This will be achieved by:

  • Full electrification of new facilities, eliminating diesel use.
  • Optimization of internal logistics for shorter distances and lower energy consumption.
  • Integrating sustainable materials and energy-efficient construction methods.
  • Providing space for innovative maintenance processes that contribute to longer equipment life.

Strategic value for the port of Rotterdam

The expansion of APM Terminals Maasvlakte II is a crucial step in the terminal's long-term strategy to further strengthen its position as a sustainable and efficient logistics hub in Europe. By investing in modern infrastructure and collaborating with leading partners, the terminal is preparing for future growth, technological innovation, and changing customer needs.

Harold Kunst, CEO APM Terminals Maasvlakte II:

“This collaboration is an important milestone in our ambition to realize the most advanced and emissionfree terminal in Europe. Together with Cordeel and AECOM, we are building an infrastructure that strengthens our operations and supports our sustainability goals.”

Erik de Bruyn, CEO Cordeel Nederland:

“We are proud of the trust that APM Terminals has placed in us. This project shows how construction, technology, and sustainability go hand in hand in the port of Rotterdam. Together, we are creating a terminal that is ready for the future.”

Pepijn Vermolen, Business Line Manager PPC AECOM:

“Our involvement in MVII fits perfectly with our mission to make infrastructure more sustainable worldwide. Together with APM Terminals and Cordeel, we are creating a terminal that is not only  functional, but also future-proof and sustainable.”
