APM Terminals Maasvlakte II has committed itself to becoming the safest terminal in the world. Therefore, we require visitors who visit our terminal (site) to complete the safety exercise below. The visitors who only visit our office do not have to comply with this.
Additional module in the gate instructions for truck drivers
It is important that you are familiar with all the new safety rules at the terminal. Therefore, an additional module is available in the gate instructions for truck drivers.
You can review the module in advance here: xxxxx.
Please note that the test must be completed at security on the terminal.
This test will become mandatory once the ATT operates fully autonomously (without a safety driver), expected in the first quarter of 2027. We kindly ask you to complete the test before that time.
Various changes are being implemented at the terminal in preparation for our expansion. It is important that you are aware of all safety rules. Together, we ensure a safe working environment for everyone.
The new module of the gate instructions for drivers will only become mandatory once the Automated Terminal Truck is operating fully autonomously on the terminal, without a safety driver. This is expected to be in the first quarter of 2027. We ask that you complete the test at terminal security before then.
Several changes will be implemented at the terminal in the coming period. These changes are necessary to further expand the terminal and keep our service safe, fast and reliable.
From the beginning of June, you will no longer drive clockwise, but counterclockwise.
Why this change? •Improved safety: The current driving direction would create complex and unsafe traffic crossings with the terminal expansion. Changing to counterclockwise reduces the number of crossings and lowers the risk of incidents.
•Better traffic glow: With the current direction and terminal expansion, incoming and outgoing traffic would intersect, and the roundabout cannot handle the future volume. Changing to counterclockwise results in shorter waiting times and more efficient handling for drivers.
•Support for terminal expansion: The new route supports the terminal expansion and ensures reliable and fast service in the future.
The terminal expansion will naturally result in longer driving distances on the terminal due to the increased number of stacks. However, changing to counterclockwise driving ensures that the total waiting time at, for example, intersections is shorter than it would be if the clockwise driving direction were maintained.
Work on the new infrastructure at the terminal will take place in several phases. This means that driving routes may change temporarily. We are doing our best to organise everything as clearly and safely as possible. Always drive carefully and remain alert.
During the works, you may encounter:
•Temporary road closures and (yellow) road markings.
•Modified signage or diversions.
•Staff and/or traffic controllers giving you instructions.

Remain alert and attentive while driving.
•Adjust your driving behaviour to changing traffic situations.
•Follow all directions from staff and/or traffic controllers.
•Report unsafe situations immediately to the gate, security or another staff member
Always follow the new signage and the instructions of our staff. Drive carefully, maintain a safe distance, and pay extra attention to your surroundings and any ongoing work along the route.
Report unsafe situations immediately to the gate, security or another staff member. Reporting it helps us keep our terminal safe for everyone.
We inform you of important changes through terminal alerts and at the gate. During your visit, pay close attention to temporary signs and the instructions of our staff.
Automated Terminal Trucks (ATTs) operate at the terminal. These vehicles transport internal containers between the rail terminal and the stacks.
•ATTs mix with regular traffic at the stacks.
•They also operate in areas where only ATTs are allowed, such as the lanes near the rail terminal and specific lanes near the stacks.
•These ATT zones are clearly marked with signs, road markings and signals.
It is strictly forbidden to enter these ATT zones on foot or park in them.
•Do not assume that the ATT will stop for you if you cross in front of it.
•Always give an ATT space and keep sufficient distance.
•Never stand on or under an ATT or its trailer.
•Never cross in front of or behind a moving ATT when getting out at your lane.
No, an Automated Terminal Truck is not given priority by the stack cranes.
No. The general rule on the terminal is: reversing vehicles (both external trucks and ATTs) always have priority when maneuvering to reach the lanes.
Yes, it has been tested. The curbs in the lanes for LZVs have been adjusted to allow them to park using the right shoulder. Physical trials were conducted with LZVs, demonstrating that they can successfully perform this maneuver within the available space.
At the stacks, ATTs operate in specially designated lanes. These are always the two right-hand lanes (lanes 4 and 5). It is strictly forbidden to enter these lanes, either in your vehicle or on foot. ATT lanes are identified by special signs and markings. Use only the lanes designated for external trucks.
Always follow the driving direction on the terminal. If necessary, take the same route on the terminal a second time.
Each ATT is equipped with a light signal:
•No light or blue light: the ATT can start driving. ATTs give an audible signal and briefly display their flashing lights when they start driving or reversing.
•Red light: the ATT has a malfunction.
