Seafarers are an important link to the ocean trade. They facilitate transporting over 80% of the trade by volumes and important commodities like food, medical goods, raw and energy materials, and manufactured goods. The crew have been unsung heroes throughout the pandemic, which is still prevalent in some part of the world.

Crew changes are vital in the shipping industry as it protects seafarer’s mental health and prevents fatigue. During the pandemic many ports/terminals were skeptical and restrictive to the crew changes owing to the shortage of personnel on board which would have hampered the operations on board and at the terminal. This impacted the mental health of many seafarers as their stay was extended on board.

We, at APM Terminals Mumbai [GTI] live by our values and we practice it in day-to-day operations. We understand the importance of crew change on time. We are delighted to share that we facilitated crew change in over 115 vessels during 2022. This is much above the industry average. Around 721 crew members benefitted by the crew change at our terminal. We facilitated 355 members to join the ship and assisted 366 crew members in signing off. The whole process was seamless through close coordination with the lines/representatives and our operation teams without any adverse impact on vessel schedule and terminal operation.
