GTI Opens New Gateway to India's Inland Markets with First Double-Stack Rail Operation
Gateway Terminals India (APM Terminals Mumbai) has successfully handled its first double-stack rake operation, opening a new logistics corridor to India's National Capital Region (NCR) via the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC). The milestone expands market access for customers while enabling faster, more efficient and sustainable inland cargo movement.
The inaugural double-stack service to Dadri handled 270 TEUs – discharging 90 TEUs and loading 180 TEUs – in just seven hours. The operation sets a new benchmark for rail productivity at GTI, while demonstrating the terminal's capability to handle higher cargo volumes with greater efficiency.
The successful movement of the double-stack rake underscores GTI's commitment to delivering faster, more reliable, and cost-effective logistics solutions for customers. By enabling greater cargo movement per train, double-stack rail services help optimize supply chain efficiency, reduce transit time, and support more sustainable hinterland transportation.
“The successful handling of our first double-stack rake is more than an operational milestone—it is a significant business enabler that strengthens connectivity between the port and key inland markets, said the Chief Commercial Officer, Gateway Terminals India (GTI) – Mr. Kumar Divya. By moving higher cargo volumes more efficiently, we can offer our customers faster transit, improved supply chain reliability, and more cost-effective logistics solutions. This achievement reflects GTI’s continued focus on operational excellence, safety, and innovation while supporting the growing needs of India’s trade ecosystem. Importantly, this opens a whole new logistics channel for trade, and we are proud to be part of this transformation,”
This milestone also marks GTI's entry into the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) ecosystem, unlocking direct access to key consumption and manufacturing markets in the National Capital Region (NCR). With GTI's extensive global connectivity and diversified portfolio of shipping services, carriers now can route NCR-bound cargo through GTI and seamlessly connect to their vessels calling at Nhava Sheva. The development enhances market reach, strengthens supply chain flexibility, and positions GTI as an even more strategic gateway for India's import and export trade.
As GTI continues to expand its multimodal capabilities, the terminal is strengthening connections between global shipping services and India's inland markets, giving customers greater choice, better efficiency and more resilient supply chains.
