Introducing the Future

The May 24th opening ceremony for the new APM Terminals Maasvlakte II Rotterdam container terminal was officially begun with the command given by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander of The Netherlands by radio to the operator of one of the facility’s eight remote-controlled cranes to lift the specially decorated container and put the gala celebration underway.

APM Terminals Maasvlakte II Rotterdam is the world’s most technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable container facility. The 86 hectare (212 acre) deep-water terminal features 1,000 meters of quay, on-dock rail, and eight fully-automated electric-powered Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, with an initial annual throughput capacity of 2.7 million TEUs, representing an investment on the part of APM Terminals of approximately half a billion Euros.

APM Terminals Maasvlakte II is the world’s first fully-automated container terminal, and the first to utilize remotely-controlled STS gantry cranes. It is also the world’s first container terminal to be powered entirely from renewable wind-energy, resulting in zero emissions of greenhouse gases or particulate pollutants.

Construction on the facility began in May 2012, with the first commercial vessel call taking place in December 2014. The fully-automated operations have been designed to significantly increase productivity and safety, which will be key factors in terminal operations as Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCS) of 10,000 TEU capacity and above, requiring moves of up to 5,000 containers per port call, increasingly dominate the global containership fleet. At planned full build-out, the terminal will cover 180 hectares (445 acres) and offer 2,800 meters of deep-sea quay (19.65 meters/64.5 feet depth), with an annual throughput capacity of 4.5 million TEUs.
