Six new electric cranes for APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas in Mexico
APM Terminals Lázaro Cárdenas has welcomed six state-of-the-art electric ARMG cranes, an important step in advancing Mexico’s logistics industry. These cranes offer maximum efficiency, improved safety and zero direct emissions, marking an important milestone ahead of the terminal’s Phase II operations, scheduled to start in 2026.
APM Terminals has invested USD 165 million to date in this expansion phase, highlighting its commitment to driving Mexico’s economic growth and transitioning towards more sustainable port operations.
“At APM Terminals Mexico, we’re dedicated to supporting the country’s infrastructure, industry, and, most importantly, its people,” said Beatriz Yera, Managing Director of APM Terminals Mexico. “This investment demonstrates our long-term vision of developing intelligent, efficient, and sustainable ports ready for global competition”.
Phase II includes expanding the terminal area by 65 hectares, doubling the terminal's capacity to 2.2 million TEUs. This positions Lázaro Cárdenas as one of the most advanced ports on the Pacific coast, and reinforces its strategic importance to Mexico’s foreign trade.
Key technological improvements include:
- Six more electric ARMG cranes: Fully automated, for precise operations and zero emissions.
- 14 hybrid shuttle carriers: Already operational, accelerating intra-terminal cargo movement.
- Four empty-container handlers: Capable of stacking up to seven containers high and lifting two containers simultaneously.
Additionally, three specialised blocks for full containers and a dedicated yard for empty containers will significantly streamline cargo flow. Along with the expansion comes comprehensive technical training for all operational personnel, ensuring adherence to the highest international standards.
Through these advancements, APM Terminals is strengthening infrastructure, boosting economic growth, creating jobs and decarbonising operations.
With this expansion, Lázaro Cárdenas strengthens its position as a strategic gateway ready to meet future global logistics demands.
