Building a new generation of skilled port operators
As APM Terminals Suape in Brazil prepares to begin operations, building a skilled local workforce is proving just as important as building world-class infrastructure.
In the Pernambuco state in Brazil, APM Terminals has launched a structured technical development programme designed to develop a new generation of maintenance technicians. The programme is creating a direct pathway from learning to employment while strengthening the terminal's future operational readiness.
Building skills for day one
Developed as a collaboration between APM Terminals Suape and SENAI (National Service for Technical Training), the programme addresses a critical need: developing local technical talent with electrical, mechanical and automation capabilities to support current and future terminal operations.
The programme also addresses a wider challenge in the region, where specialised port mechatronics skills remain limited and traditional training systems can take two to three years before technicians reach full performance.
Importantly, the programme was designed with the local community in mind. All 25 participants came from Ipojuca, where the terminal is located, or neighbouring Cabo de Santo Agostinho.
Developing talent close to home
The first cohort brought together participants primarily between the ages of 20 and 40, who completed a comprehensive 520-hour learning pathway that covered safety, electrical systems, mechanics, automation and port operations. Delivered over approximately 20 hours per week, the programme comprised classroom learning, practical exercises, knowledge assessments and continuous coaching to ensure participants developed technical skills and operational understanding.
The results highlight the strength of the model. Of the 25 apprentices, 24 progressed to interviews and 12 were approved for employment. Following two withdrawals, 10 participants joined APM Terminals Suape as electromechanical technicians, representing a significant share of the terminal's future maintenance workforce. All participants successfully completed the training programme, with the first apprentice hired in December 2025.
From training to employment
“The Suape programme demonstrates what is possible when business needs, terminal leadership and training partners come together around a shared objective,” says Iván García Jorquera, Competence Development Specialist at APM Terminals. “By creating a structured pathway from learning to employment, we are helping develop the technical capabilities needed for safe and reliable operations, while creating meaningful opportunities for local talent.”
For participant Aldemir Júnior, the programme provided both technical skills and a pathway into a new career.
"I joined the programme because I saw an excellent opportunity to expand my knowledge and prepare myself for new professional challenges. As a resident of Ipojuca, I was highly motivated to learn more about the sector. The programme was fundamental to my development, providing knowledge on the maintenance and operation of port equipment and opening the doors for me to work in this field. I am grateful to SENAI Pernambuco and APM Terminals, a team I am now proud to be part of."
The programme also supports the terminal's long-term technology ambitions. As Latin America's first fully electric container terminal, APM Terminals Suape will rely on advanced equipment and automation systems that require specialised technical capabilities. By introducing participants to modern automation concepts and developing expertise in electrical and mechanical systems, the programme is helping build the workforce needed to support efficient, reliable and safe operations from day one.
Preparing for a fully electric future
The Suape Technical Development Programme is now being considered as a model for future technical talent initiatives across APM Terminals, demonstrating how targeted competence development can accelerate readiness, strengthen operational performance and create lasting value for local communities.
