Engineering a more sustainable maritime operations

Meet Ashley Winkels

What drew you to the maritime industry?

As an industrial and mechanical engineer, I’ve always been drawn to big equipment and environments focused on efficiency. The maritime industry is fascinating – fast-moving, essential and full of complex systems to improve.

What does your role involve?

I ensure that our equipment and operations have minimal environmental impact. That includes site inspections, regulatory compliance and leading programmes like ISO Certification and Zero Waste. I work closely with regulators and stakeholders to improve our sustainability footprint.

What’s a challenge you’ve faced?

Leading our ISO 14001 certification as a new joiner was a huge task, especially while I was still learning about the organisation. But the early audit went incredibly well, and that progress felt so rewarding.

What advice would you give to young women?

Go for it – you won’t regret it. Maritime is constantly evolving. Every day brings new challenges and innovations. And the women in this industry? There’s a real sisterhood. When you meet someone else with a port background, there’s an instant connection.
