Leading with grit and grace: redefining maritime leadership
Meet Emily Chiappini Zamola
Supervisor, APM Terminals Gothenburg, Sweden
With APM Terminals for 4 years
What inspired you to work in the maritime industry?
I was drawn to the intensity and realness of it. The pace, the pressure, the people – it’s a space where actions matter. As a woman, I knew I’d stand out, but I saw that as a strength. I wanted to show that leadership can be both tough and warm – and that women belong here, not just to participate, but to lead.
What does your day-to-day look like?
I manage container flow across rail, vessels, trucks and empties. But more than logistics, my focus is on people. I lead operations with structure and soul, making sure performance and safety are prioritised while building a team that feels seen and supported. I live by the belief that when people thrive, performance follows.
Any challenges that you’ve overcome?
Earning trust and credibility in a male-dominated space wasn’t easy. But through consistent, clear communication and a people-first mindset, I’ve helped shift the culture. I’ve learned that being different is a strength and that it opens the door for others to follow.
What’s your advice to young women?
The sea is powerful, and so are you. Be curious. Ask questions. Trust your voice. This industry is evolving, and it needs your perspective. Leadership isn’t about fitting in – it’s about standing up.
