A love of the sea and big machines: a journey into maritime leadership

Meet Isabella Niebuhr Posch

Supervisor, APM Terminals Aarhus, Denmark
With APM Terminals for 2 months

What inspired you to work in the maritime industry?

I’ve always loved being outdoors. Growing up by the sea gave me a sense of freedom, and I’ve been fascinated by the power and calm it brings. At the same time, I’ve always had a thing for big machines, so combining both passions made joining the maritime world a perfect fit.

What does a typical day look like in your role ?

I’m one of seven supervisors overseeing dock workers in Aarhus. My day usually starts with team meetings and making sure everyone has the right equipment or machinery for their tasks. I also coordinate with vessel crews to address anything that might impact operations. Some days, it’s hands-on, like taking photos of containers for customer questions. Every day brings something new.

What’s one challenge you’ve overcome?

My fear of heights! Whether it was my first time atop a crane or climbing aboard a mainliner, I definitely felt the nerves. But now, I’ve grown to love the adrenaline and the view. It pushes me outside my comfort zone, and that’s where the growth happens.

What advice would you give to young women considering a maritime career?

Go for it! My only regret is not starting sooner. I smile every day I come to work. The team here feels like family, and the work is both exciting and rewarding.
