Breaking waves and barriers: a journey in maritime communication

Meet Kajal Vadiya

Radio Officer, APM Terminals Pipavav, India
With APM Terminals for 19 years

What inspired you to join the maritime world?

With an engineering background in communication, I was drawn to technologies like antennas, radar and wireless systems. Maritime communication had just enough technical challenge to hook me, but what really inspired me was stepping into a space where women are still underrepresented. I wanted to carve my own path.

What’s your role like?

As a radio officer, I manage high-stakes communication for vessel movements. My work demands precision and fast decision-making. It’s a role full of intensity and unpredictability – and that’s what I love about it. Every day feels like a mission.

A challenge you’ve faced?

Being the only woman in my department meant I had to work harder to earn respect and prove myself. But those challenges built resilience. I’ve learned how to adapt quickly, focus under pressure, and thrive in any situation.

What’s your message to young women considering this path?

Don’t let tradition limit your ambition. The maritime industry is changing, and there’s space for you to grow. Be bold, be curious and remember: you belong here just as much as anyone else.
