APM Terminals Elizabeth advances modernization journey with investment in next-generation terminal equipment
APM Terminals Elizabeth announced a major milestone in its ongoing modernization journey through agreements for 96 electric terminal tractors from Orange EV and 34 electric rubber-tired gantry cranes (E-RTGs) from Konecranes, reinforcing the terminal's long-term commitment to building the next generation of port infrastructure at the Port of New York and New Jersey. The investments represent another significant step in a broader transformation program focused on enhancing terminal capacity, strengthening operational reliability and preparing for future cargo growth.
As one of the largest container terminals in the Port of New York and New Jersey, APM Terminals Elizabeth continues to invest in the infrastructure, equipment and operational capabilities needed to support evolving customer needs and increasingly complex supply chains. The terminal handles approximately 28% of the port's container throughput and supports more than 600 vessel calls and 800,000 truck visits annually, making continued investment in modern terminal infrastructure critical to maintaining efficient cargo movement and supporting regional and national commerce.
Investing in the next generation of terminal operations
The new equipment will support ongoing efforts to modernize terminal operations and strengthen the efficiency and reliability of one of North America's most important container gateways. Together with other infrastructure and operational improvements underway at the terminal, the investments form part of a long-term strategy to build a more capable, resilient and future-ready operation.
"The future of Elizabeth depends on our willingness to invest today," said Henrik Kristensen, Managing Director of APM Terminals Elizabeth. "These agreements represent another important milestone in our modernization journey, helping us strengthen critical port infrastructure, enhance operational performance and prepare for future cargo growth. Modernization is about more than equipment and facilities. It is also about investing in our people. Together with our labor partners, we are building the capabilities, skills and expertise needed to support the next generation of terminal operations while keeping our workforce at the center of our success."
The investments reflect APM Terminals Elizabeth's commitment to deploying proven technologies and modern equipment that help strengthen terminal performance, improve service reliability and support long-term growth. The terminal's modernization strategy is focused on ensuring Elizabeth remains well-positioned to serve customers, support supply chain resilience and accommodate future cargo demand for decades to come.
"We are honored to continue our long-standing partnership with APM Terminals Elizabeth as the terminal advances its modernization journey," said Mikko Lepistö, Senior Vice President, Konecranes. "More than 20 years after our first crane deliveries to the site, some of those cranes are still supporting daily operations. This new agreement reflects both the strength of our relationship and our shared commitment to building a more efficient and electrified future for one of North America's key container gateways."
"This order represents an inflection point as early adopters like APM have proven the economic, safety, and operational advantages of Orange EV's electric terminal trucks, and are now standardizing around our turnkey solution," said Kurt Neutgens, CEO of Orange EV. "Port Elizabeth is setting the pace in port electrification and the rest of the industry is taking note."
Building capacity for future growth
As APM Terminals Elizabeth continues its transformation, the terminal is also focused on ensuring its workforce is prepared to operate and maintain increasingly advanced terminal technologies. Working closely with labor partners, the terminal is investing in training and operational capabilities needed to support the future of cargo handling at the Port of New York and New Jersey.
"Continued investment in terminal infrastructure is essential to ensuring the Port of New York and New Jersey remains competitive, efficient and prepared for future growth since our gateway is the economic heart of this region," said Bethann Rooney, Director of the Port Department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. "Modern new electric equipment strengthens the capacity and reliability of our port facilities and moves us all toward greener operations that support the Port Authority's sustainability goal of a net-zero future."
These investments build on APM Terminals Elizabeth's broader modernization strategy and reinforce its commitment to strengthening the Port of New York and New Jersey's role as a leading gateway for global trade.
