Phase two of Vado Gateway on schedule after first successful year of operations

The Vado Gateway container terminal was inaugurated on 12-12-2019, just weeks before the global covid-19 pandemic hit its first peak in Italy. Nevertheless, after its first full year of operations, customers and employees will testify to the terminals accolade as ‘one of the most advanced terminals in the Mediterranean’.

Despite the ongoing difficulties arising from the pandemic during 2020, civil works for the construction phase two of the new Container Terminal have remained on schedule. Phase two will be fully operational early 2021, providing the Vado Gateway with a longer quay and greater storage capacity in the yard.

Growth

From a commercial perspective the timing couldn’t be better. Over recent months the Terminal has attracted a number of new key services, the most recent being the new VAX service that connects Vado Gateway with the port of Piraeus. This service is operated by Diamond Line, part of the COSCO Shipping Group.

The terminal offers a number of advanced technologies to ensure that supply chains through the terminal operate as efficiently as possible, including a real time online container tracking system (Track & Trace), TERMPoint Truck Appointment System, which is also available as an App, and APIs for the full integration of real-time terminal data into customer’s own Transport Management Systems.

Award for Innovation

The application of new technologies to support punctual service for customers hasn’t gone unrecognized. APM Terminals Vado Ligure’s new container terminal received a special mention in the "Innovation in technology and logistics 4.0" category during the Logistics of the Year 2020 award. The award is run by Assologistica (national association of logistics operators in third party), Assologistica Cultura e Formazione (training branch of Assologistica) and the Euromerci newspaper, now in its sixteenth edition this year.

The award recognizes companies and managers in the logistics and supply chain management sector who have implemented innovative solutions in areas such a Research & Development, Training, Sustainability, Multimodality, IT, Logistics Real Estate, HR and more to strengthen their operations during the year.

Raising Environmental Standards

During 2020 APM Terminals Vado Ligure obtained the important ISO 14001:2015 certification for the implementation of an environmental management system to enhance environmental performance.

Once fully operational, the Vado Gateway’s goal is to move 40% of the containers passing through the terminal by rail. There are currently weekly trains servicing the terminal using the RTE railway infrastructure. These are supporting transfers to the Pioltello – Milan and Rubiera - Modena and Padua interports.
