Safety Policy

Our safety policy outlines the mandatory requirements to keep our most valuable asset safe: the lives of our employees. This policy applies to all employees, visitors and service providers at APM Terminals Pecém.

Pedestrian Protection

  • No pedestrian should walk through the terminal, except in pedestrian tracks, which should always be well marked.
  • Internal transport should be made available, when appropriate.
  • The appropriate PPE should always be used. It is indispensable to use safety footwear, high visibility clothing with retro-reflective tape, safety helmet and jugular.
  • External drivers should not leave their vehicles except to meet their basic needs. In this case, they should use pedestrian lanes and wear high-visibility clothing.
  • The locking and unlocking of the carriage pins must be done in the GATE, and it is not allowed to perform this activity in the terminal.
  • The terminal should provide guidance on the location of containers in GATE. Terminal Assistants or Lecturers will provide any additional guidance needed.
  • Drivers must remain inside the truck until the arrival of the equipment that will load or unload the unit.
  • Whenever employees or contractors perform their activities in places where pedestrians would not normally be, cones should be placed, indicating workers on foot.
  • Anyone conducting traffic directing tasks should use additional PPE or carry a safety cone next to them.

Working around container handling equipment

  • Vehicles or pedestrians are not allowed to pass within the risk zone without the operator's permission.
  • The risk zone is defined as at least 10 meters radius of the container handling equipment.
  • Any pedestrian needing to enter the danger zone must make eye contact with the operator and obtain permission before entering the risk zone.
  • Any driver of small vehicles or trucks who needs to transit in the danger zone should make eye contact with the operator of the equipment and gain permission for traffic before entering the danger zone.
  • All container handling equipment must have reverse alarms.

Terminal Traffic Pattern

The terminal shall periodically review traffic patterns to ensure that:

  • The established standard supports safe and efficient vehicle movement.
  • The pattern should be well marked, with constant paints and understood by drivers and pedestrians.
  • The standard shall be enforced, removing any obstacles to access the terminal, where appropriate.
  • Curves from the lines of operation at the dock and bridge should be carefully planned and monitored. "U" curves are only allowed in pre-approved areas and informed in layout. If a problem occurs during the operation of ships, which requires a review of the traffic flow, management and coordination should be informed.

Vehicle Safety

  • The speed limit around the patio, pier and Tmut for any vehicle is 20km/h and 40km/h. The use of the seat belt is mandatory for driver and passenger, all the way inside the terminal.
  • Any badly positioned or broken container will be checked by the coordination / management before being moved.
  • The owner and the terminal should have a random check procedure for customer loads, which have a history of bad ovate loads.
  • Never tow a bombcart / trailer above the minimum height required to rid the landing gear of the ground. Always keep the minimum speed when making curves.
  • Where necessary, signaling barriers shall be protected by flexible barriers or drums / barrels.

Falling objects

  • Never leave a catch bar hanging or loosen while attached to a tensioner.
  • Keep pedestrian walkways free of equipment / objects.
  • Never walk under a suspended load, on the suspended freight path, or on the edge where the containers are being worked.

Working at height

  • NEVER perform work at heights or in places where there is no bodyguard without fall protection equipment.
  • Managerial visibility
  • Terminals should provide maximum visibility to managers and supervisors during periods of high accident frequency.

Locking and labeling

  • An appropriate locking and labeling procedure or a checklist should be used before any equipment is put into operation after maintenance.
  • Disciplinary measures
  • These measures do not exempt compliance with legal safety standards.
  • These instructions should be understood and fulfilled by all employees, visitors and partners.
  • Failure or non-compliance with these rules will result in the application of disciplinary measures provided for in current Brazilian legislation.
