APM Terminals Aarhus enters phase two of gate automation

End of 2020, APM Terminals Aarhus completed the construction of the new gate complex. As a next step towards being a more modern and digitalized facility, we are now entering phase two, which includes switching from a manual gate process to an automated process. The project is set to go live in April 2023.

APM Terminals strategy is to automate wherever appropriate, to improve the safety and security standard and increase efficiency in our terminals around the world.

“With this investment of advanced technology, we expect the flow of cargo into the terminal to become more efficient. Any issues will be solved before the gating process starts, which eliminates troubleshooting in the gate lanes”, says Helle Almind, Commercial Manager at APM Terminals Aarhus. “An automated process also reduces the risk of human errors and saves time”.

In connection with phase two of the automated gate project, a new application will be introduced to all drivers.

“Drivers will use the new app to pre-announce their visit to our terminal. When driving through the gate, they will be checked in automatically, with no manual actions needed”, says Martin Bro Andersen, Dispatch Manager at APM Terminals Aarhus.

Designed together with the trucking community
To ensure that the new process is easy and smooth for the drivers, APM Terminals Aarhus has collected feedback on the process and involved our trucking customers in the test phase.

“So far, we have received very positive feedback from the trucking companies, and we truly believe we have designed a very user-friendly and smart process, with the aim of making visits to our terminal easier for our customers. We thank all the hauliers that participate in the important tests”, Martin Bro Andersen shares.

Paving the way for new digital solutions

The automated gate, along with the upgrade of the terminal operating system Navis 4, will make it possible to include more digital solutions in the future, such as a digital Truck Appointment System via APIs.

“Automation and digitalization help improve safety and allows us to deliver better customer experience. That’s why we will continue to invest in new innovations and digital solutions, upskilling our people and use best practices from our terminals worldwide”, says Mikael Gutman, Managing Director of APM Terminals Nordic.

Phase two of automated gate project is planned to go live in April 2023. We will reach out to the trucking companies with more detailed information as the project progresses.
