APM Terminals celebrates 40 years keeping pace with the world from the Port of Algeciras Bay

The terminal celebrates four decades since the start of operations at the Juan Carlos I quay together with its employees.

APM Terminals celebrated the 40th anniversary of the launch of its operations at the Port of Algeciras Bay on Friday with its employees and a container-shaped cake. This milestone is marked on the calendar on 28 February, when in 1986 the first containers were handled at a terminal measuring just 45,000 square metres and equipped with two cranes. This was the origin of the current 67 hectares at the Juan Carlos I Quay, where in recent hours Arthur Maersk, one of Maersk's latest generation ships, has been serviced, as an example of the constant evolution of the facilities to serve global trade, with a focus on sustainability and excellent productivity, efficiency and safety figures.

The terminal's anniversary was attended by the president of the Port Authority of Algeciras Bay, Gerardo Landaluce, who stated that the Administration ‘will continue to support the terminal and its team to continue setting new milestones’. Lars Mikael Jensen, Head of Hubs & Ocean Collaboration, also spoke, recalling the journey from the initial terminal project to the present day, congratulating the team on their achievements and encouraging them to continue their work on efficiency in the future. Looking to the future, José Miguel Carreño, COO of APM Terminals Algeciras, said he feels ‘doubly responsible, both personally as a native of Algeciras and professionally,’ as well as proud of the present and looking back at what has been achieved by everyone – shareholders, employees and institutions – through the video “40 years in step with the world”, edited with historical images to mark the anniversary.

This video premiered the night before at another of the events planned to mark the anniversary of APM Terminals Algeciras, held in the auditorium of the Higher Technical School of Engineering, where three generations of employees: retired staff, long-serving active employees and new recruits, represented the past, present and future of the terminal with their speeches. In addition, at this forum, Keld Pedersen, Director of Hub Terminals, praised both the role of the workforce and the port community in maintaining the high levels of efficiency required by an increasingly demanding logistics chain.
