Shaping Tomorrow’s Transport: APM Terminals Bahrain Joins AmCham Luncheon Panel Discussion

In the presence of His Excellency Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Bahrain hosted an exceptional Keynote Address and Panel Discussion titled “Navigating Bahrain's Future of Transportation & Telecommunications” at The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain. The event was a resounding success that brought together senior government officials, ambassadors, business leaders, and AmCham members in a dynamic setting that facilitated networking, knowledge sharing, and meaningful dialogue.  

His Excellency affirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain continues to reinforce its position as a leading regional center in transportation, telecommunications, and smart transport. This progress is attributed to the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of the Kingdom, and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The Minister also emphasized the depth of Bahraini-American relations, describing them as a robust model for strategic cooperation founded on shared values and a unified vision for the future. He highlighted that the two friendly countries share a strong partnership across various sectors, including aviation, logistics, the digital economy, big data, and technology investments. This partnership is further strengthened by the free trade agreement and the appealing investment climate in the Kingdom of Bahrain. 

Representing the U.S. Embassy, Chargé d’Affaires Elizabeth Litchfield expressed her appreciation to His Excellency Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications and the American Chamber of Commerce Bahrain for their leadership in strengthening U.S.-Bahrain economic partnerships in the transportation and aviation sectors. In her remarks, Chargé Litchfield highlighted the relaunch of Gulf Air’s direct flights to the United States in October. She said, “This is a milestone to be celebrated, and one that will bring increased business, cultural, and educational ties between both our nations.” 

The event culminated in an engaging panel discussion, moderated by Zahraa Taher, AmCham Bahrain Board Secretary, where H.E. was joined by esteemed leaders including Wael Zaoud, Managing Director at Boeing Qatar, and Matthew Luckhurst, CEO & Managing Director at APM Terminals Bahrain. The panelists discussed the importance of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable development, incorporating sustainable practices, exploring future investment opportunities, and establishing Bahrain as a leading logistics hub in the Gulf, all in line with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030. 

APM Terminals reaffirmed its commitment to Bahrain's economic growth and sustainability through strategic investments at Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP). In his remarks, Matthew Luckhurst highlighted, “By combining global expertise with Bahrain’s national ambition, we are delivering cleaner, more efficient operations and unlocking the next phase of growth in logistics and connectivity.” 

APM Terminals Bahrain showcased their continuous initiatives to boost capacity, modernise equipment and strengthen regional connectivity at Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP). Berth upgrades for larger vessels and electrification of cranes and yard equipment are positioning KBSP as the Gulf’s most reliable and sustainable gateway. In addition, enhanced cross-border corridors with Saudi Arabia and customs advisory services will speed up clearances for exporters and manufacturers. Future multimodal links via causeway and rail, along with free economic zones, will attract industry, create jobs and deepen Bahrain’s value chains. 

Globally, APM Terminals has already demonstrated the impact of smarter berth planning, yard deployment, and truck appointment systems in ports such as Elizabeth, Mobile, Gothenburg, and Tangier. These proven tools are now being deployed in Bahrain, where KBSP has achieved CPPI’s number one ranking in its segment. 

 Wael Zaoud from Boeing added, “Boeing’s long-standing partnership with Bahrain is vital for enhancing regional connectivity and driving economic diversification. This collaboration not only strengthens Bahrain’s position as a logistics hub but also exemplifies how strategic partnerships can drive sustainable economic development and innovation in the region." 

Qays Zu’bi, President of AmCham Bahrain noted, “This event is exceptionally timely, reflecting the current momentum of agreements and partnerships being forged between Bahrain and the U.S. in the transportation and telecommunications sectors.” He remarked that AmCham Bahrain remains dedicated to facilitating dialogue and cooperation among industry leaders, supporting initiatives that not only benefit members but also contribute to the collective growth of Bahrain.

من جانبها، أعربت القائم بأعمال السفارة الأمريكية، إليزابيث ليتشفيلد، عن تقديرها لسعادة الوزير والغرفة الأمريكية للتجارة في البحرين، لدورهما في تعزيز الشراكات الاقتصادية بين البحرين والولايات المتحدة في قطاعي المواصلات والطيران. كما أشارت إلى استئناف رحلات الخطوط الجوية الخليجية المباشرة إلى الولايات المتحدة في أكتوبر الماضي، ووصفت ذلك بالإنجاز البارز الذي من شأنه تعزيز الروابط الاقتصادية والثقافية والتعليمية بين البلدين. 

واختتم الحدث بجلسة حوارية أدارها الزميلة زهراء طاهر، سكرتيرة مجلس إدارة الغرفة الأمريكية للتجارة بالبحرين، حيث انضم إلى معالي الوزير عدد من القادة البارزين، منهم وائل زعود، المدير الإداري في شركة بوينغ (Boeing) قطر، وماثيو لوكهيرست، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة APM Terminals Bahrain   (الشركة المشغلة لميناء خليفة بن سلمان التجاري) . وناقش المشاركون أهمية الشراكات بين القطاعين العام والخاص في تعزيز التنمية المستدامة، وتبني الممارسات المستدامة، واستكشاف فرص الاستثمار المستقبلية، وتعزيز مكانة البحرين كمركز لوجستي رائد في منطقة الخليج، تماشيًا مع رؤية البحرين الاقتصادية 2030. 

وأكدت شركة  APM Terminals Bahrainالتزامها بدعم نمو الاقتصاد البحريني وتحقيق الاستدامة، من خلال استثمارات استراتيجية في ميناء خليفة بن سلمان (KBSP). وأوضح ماثيو لاكهيرست: "من خلال دمج الخبرة العالمية مع الطموحات الوطنية للبحرين، نقدم عمليات أكثر كفاءة ونظافة، ونساهم في فتح مرحلة جديدة من النمو في قطاع اللوجستيات والربط." 

كما استعرضت الشركة مبادراتها المستمرة لزيادة الطاقة الاستيعابية وتحديث المعدات وتعزيز الربط الإقليمي في ميناء خليفة بن سلمان، بما في ذلك تطوير الأرصفة لاستيعاب السفن الأكبر، وتحويل الرافعات ومعدات الساحة للعمل بالكهرباء، مما يجعل الميناء أحد أكثر الموانئ موثوقية واستدامة في الخليج. كما ستسهم المسارات العابرة للحدود مع المملكة العربية السعودية وخدمات الاستشارات الجمركية في تسريع إجراءات التخليص للمصدرين والمصنعين، فيما ستجذب الروابط متعددة الوسائط المستقبلية عبر الجسور والسكك الحديدية والمناطق الاقتصادية الحرة القطاعات الصناعية، وتخلق فرص عمل، وتعزز سلاسل القيمة في البحرين. 

وعلى الصعيد العالمي، أثبتت APM Terminals فاعلية التخطيط الذكي للأرصفة ونشر المعدات في الساحات، وأنظمة مواعيد الشاحنات في موانئ مثل إليزابيث وموبيل وغوتنبرغ وطنجة، وقد بدأت الشركة تطبيق هذه الأدوات في البحرين، حيث حقق ميناء KBSP المرتبة الأولى في فئته وفق تصنيف CPPI. 

من جانبه، قال وائل زعود من بوينغ: "إن الشراكة طويلة الأمد بين بوينغ والبحرين ضرورية لتعزيز الربط الإقليمي ودعم التنوع الاقتصادي، كما أنها تُبرز كيف يمكن للشراكات الاستراتيجية دفع التنمية الاقتصادية المستدامة وتعزيز الابتكار في المنطقة." 

وأشار قيّس زعبي، رئيس الغرفة الأمريكية للتجارة بالبحرين، إلى أن "هذا الحدث جاء في توقيت مثالي، ويعكس الزخم الحالي للاتفاقيات والشراكات بين البحرين والولايات المتحدة في قطاعي المواصلات والاتصالات." وأضاف أن الغرفة ملتزمة بتسهيل الحوار والتعاون بين قادة الصناعة، ودعم المبادرات التي تعود بالنفع على الأعضاء والنمو الاقتصادي الشامل للبحرين.

تعد الغرفة الأمريكية للتجارة في البحرين (AmCham) جمعية أعمال رائدة وغير ربحية، تعمل كحلقة وصل بين الشركات، وتلعب دورًا رئيسيًا في تعزيز التجارة الثنائية، ودعم نمو الشركات الأمريكية في البحرين، والمساهمة في التنمية الاقتصادية للبلدين، وتعزيز العلاقات الشاملة بين الولايات المتحدة والبحرين. تأسست الغرفة في عام 2004 بعد توقيع اتفاقية التجارة الحرة بين البحرين والولايات المتحدة، لتصبح البحرين أول دولة في مجلس التعاون الخليجي تدخل في مثل هذه الاتفاقية.
