APM Terminals Bahrain Celebrates National Milestone as Khalifa Bin Salman Port Wins Regional "Sustainable Institution" Award

Following the Kingdom of Bahrain securing two prominent accolades at the Gulf Green Mobility Forum 2026 in Salalah, Sultanate of Oman, and Khalifa Bin Salman Port being awarded "Sustainable Institution", APM Terminals Bahrain, the official operator of the port, has expressed its immense satisfaction with this national achievement, which crowns the journey of sustainable development in the port sector. 

The company commended the supportive legislative and regulatory environment provided by the Kingdom of Bahrain for the transport and logistics sector, praising the pivotal role of the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications in steering the Kingdom’s drive toward developing an advanced, sustainable transport sector, fostering regional cooperation, and sharing best practices in green mobility. 

The company explained that Khalifa Bin Salman Port receiving this award embodies the success of the strategic partnership between the public and private sectors in translating national policies into tangible operational projects on the ground, noting that the solar energy project is the primary pillar behind this recognition. 

The project cost approximately BHD 3.8 million, involving the installation of approximately 26,960 solar panels across an area of nearly 71,000 square meters on warehouse rooftops. With a production capacity of up to 11.4 megawatts, the project generates around 18 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually—an amount sufficient to fully cover the port's electricity needs. This qualitative transition contributed to reducing the terminal's carbon footprint by 71% during 2025.

On this occasion, Matthew Luckhurst, Managing Director of APM Terminals Bahrain, stated:

The company concluded by emphasizing that the solar energy project is part of a broader strategic vision to completely decarbonize port operations, which includes expanding the electrification of operational equipment and vehicles, in alignment with APM Terminals' global commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 and supporting the Kingdom's drive toward carbon neutrality.

تعقيباً على فوز مملكة البحرين بجائزتين بارزتين ضمن فعاليات "الملتقى الخليجي للتنقل الأخضر 2026" في مدينة صلالة بسلطنة عمان، ونيل ميناء خليفة بن سلمان جائزة "المؤسسة المستدامة"؛ أعربت شركة "ايه بي إم تيرمينالز البحرين"، المشغل الرسمي للميناء، عن فخرها بهذا الإنجاز الوطني الذي يتوج مسيرة التنمية المستدامة في قطاع الموانئ. 

وثمنت الشركة البيئة التشريعية والداعمة التي توفرها مملكة البحرين لقطاع النقل والخدمات اللوجستية، مشيدة بالدور المحوري لوزارة المواصلات والاتصالات في قيادة توجهات المملكة نحو تطوير قطاع نقل متطور ومستدام، وتعزيز التعاون الإقليمي وتبادل أفضل الممارسات في مجال النقل الأخضر. 

وأوضحت الشركة أن نيل ميناء خليفة بن سلمان لهذه الجائزة يجسد نجاح الشراكة الاستراتيجية بين القطاعين العام والخاص في تحويل السياسات الوطنية إلى مشاريع تشغيلية ملموسة على أرض الواقع، لافتة إلى أن مشروع الطاقة الشمسية يُعد الركيزة الأبرز وراء هذا التتويج. 

وقد بلغت تكلّفة المشروع نحو 3.8 مليون دينار بحريني، وشمل تركيب نحو 26,960 لوحاً شمسياً على مساحة تقارب 71 ألف متر مربع من أسطح المستودعات، بقدرة إنتاجية تصل إلى 11.4 ميغاواط، بما ينتج نحو 18 غيغاواط/ساعة من الطاقة المتجددة سنوياً—وهي كمية تكفي لتغطية كامل احتياجات الميناء من الكهرباء. وقد أسهم هذا التحول النوعي في خفض 71% من البصمة الكربونية للمحطة خلال عام 2025. 

وبهذه المناسبة، قال ماثيو لوكهورست، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة "ايه بي إم تيرمينالز البحرين": 

"يسعدنا ويشرفنا أن نشهد هذا الإنجاز الجديد لمملكة البحرين بحصول ميناء خليفة بن سلمان على جائزة 'المؤسسة المستدامة' على مستوى دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي؛ وهو تقدير نعتز به يعكس ثمرة التزامنا الراسخ بخفض الأثر البيئي لعملياتنا التشغيلية. إن هذا النجاح ما كان ليتحقق لولا بيئة العمل الداعمة في مملكة البحرين والشراكة الاستراتيجية الوثيقة مع وزارة المواصلات والاتصالات، والتي تمثل حجر الأساس في تحويل السياسات الوطنية للتحول الأخضر إلى واقع ملموس." 

واختتمت الشركة التأكيد على أن مشروع الطاقة الشمسية يندرج ضمن رؤية استراتيجية أوسع لإزالة الكربون بالكامل من عمليات الميناء، تشمل التوسع في كهربة المعدات والمركبات التشغيلية، بما يتماشى مع التزام "ايه بي إم تيرمينالز" العالمي بالوصول إلى صافي انبعاثات صفري بحلول عام 2040، ودعم مسيرة المملكة نحو تحقيق الحياد الكربوني.
