Christmas will be green this year

This year, Christmas presents are being shipped greener than ever. In November, APM Terminals Gothenburg handled 35% more rail freight compared with the same month last year.

In 2019, the Green Gothenburg Gateway initiative was launched, a concept that aims to link rail and maritime transport to enable climate-smart freight transport from Sweden, via Gothenburg, to the world market.

“The concept has been well received on the market and it is just as clear as it is pleasing that many people are choosing rail as a sustainable and reliable alternative to road transport,” says Magnus Lundberg, Head of Commercial at APM Terminals Gothenburg.

35% increase in rail freight

More than half of the total freight volume handled by APM Terminals Gothenburg is transported by rail. In November, rail volumes increased by 35% compared with the same period last year, an increase that is mainly driven by strong and accelerating import volumes.

“This year, Christmas presents are being shipped green and we are seeing that this trend is only continuing as our existing customers are increasing their rail volumes even further. At the same time, we are welcoming new rail shuttles from different parts of the country,” concludes Magnus Lundberg.
