Strong growth at APM Terminals Gothenburg defies market downturn in Sweden

Recent figures from Ports of Sweden show that APM Terminals Gothenburg is moving against the trend in a declining market. The terminal is increasing its volumes and is on track for a record year.

Trend: cargo is concentrating in the major ports

During the first half of 2025, the Swedish container market declined by 1.6 percent compared to the same period last year. APM Terminals Gothenburg, however, shows positive growth with an increase of 0.5 percent. Growth is visible across both imports and exports, as well as in volumes transported by rail and vessel.

"The concentration of cargo in Sweden’s major ports is a clearly accelerating trend. There is strong interest in transporting goods from Sweden’s east coast to APM Terminals in Gothenburg by rail – and demand continues to grow," says Per Wahlström, Market Analyst at APM Terminals Gothenburg.

On track for a record year – preparing for increased demand

Import volumes through APM Terminals have risen by 10 percent compared to last year, surpassing levels seen during the COVID boom. Exports are also showing strong numbers, resulting in an almost 50/50 balance between imports and exports.

"We are definitely on track for a record year. Imports are driving volume growth, but our extensive rail network – covering all of Sweden – is also contributing to an increase in exports, despite the economic downturn and challenging times for the Swedish export industry.

"The government’s plan for next year aims to stimulate the economy again – both for industry and consumers. We are already seeing signs of movement, and we expect it to be reflected even more in our cargo volumes. That is why we are now preparing to meet the increased demand," concludes Per Wahlström.
