Port of Kalundborg's Revolutionary Journey Towards Sustainability: Reducing Emissions by 90%
Striving for a greener future, APM Terminals Kalundborg has set sights on an ambitious goal: a 90 percent reduction in emissions achieved through the electrification of all cranes and a transition to fossil-free fuel for container handling equipment. Adding the weekly call of the world’s first methanol-powered container vessel, these initiatives signify a major leap forward in setting new standards for environmental responsibility in the shipping industry.
“With the measures we are taking, we can offer a green gateway to the Zealand market,” notes Mikael Gutman, Managing Director of APM Terminals Nordics. “Not only is this unique in a Danish context – it is also a global standout, placing Kalundborg on the world map as a leader of the green energy transition”.
Port of Kalundborg – Pioneering a Green Energy Hub
The Port of Kalundborg's commitment to crane electrification, combined with APM Terminals' adoption of biofuel, enables customers to benefit from a substantial reduction in landside emissions, as well as positioning the terminal as a shining example of eco-friendly innovation in the maritime sector.
“We are proud to announce that APM Terminals Kalundborg will be joining our partner terminal APM Terminals Gothenburg, as two of only a handful APM Terminals worldwide to utilise biofuel for container handling equipment,” shares Mikael Gutman.
Weekly Arrival of the First Methanol-Fuelled Vessel
November 2 marked a historic day for APM Terminals Kalundborg as the world's first methanol-fuelled vessel, Laura Maersk, made its inaugural call. The ground-breaking vessel is set to dock at the Port of Kalundborg every Thursday, marking a consistent commitment to sustainable practices.
"The weekly presence of this pioneering vessel is a green signal for the future we are stepping into, meeting the demands of our customers for sustainable logistics solutions," concludes Mikael Gutman.
