Kalundborg Port and APM Terminals extend partnership until 2043

Port of Kalundborg and APM Terminals have extended their strategic partnership to ensure continued growth, high efficiency, and enhanced container capacity—benefiting customers, partners and the local community.

The agreement prolongs APM Terminals’ commitment to operating the container terminal at Ny Vesthavn in Kalundborg by an additional 10 years, with the option for further extension. This ensures the continued development of Kalundborg as a modern, competitive and responsible container port.

Established in 2021, the collaboration between Port of Kalundborg and APM Terminals has positioned the terminal—Zealand’s only deep-water facility capable of accommodating large vessels—as a modern and efficient gateway for container traffic to and from the region. The extension reflects both parties’ confidence in Kalundborg’s potential and the strength of their partnership.

“I’m pleased that this extension reaffirms our shared ambition to operate and develop a world-class container terminal with a long-term perspective. It sends a strong signal to the market and marks an important step forward for Kalundborg as a modern commercial port,” says Bent Rasmussen, Port Director at Port of Kalundborg.

Responsible Development with Global Reach

The partnership builds on previous investments in electrification and sustainable solutions. Through the joint initiative Green Zealand Gateway, Kalundborg Port and APM Terminals are working actively to reduce CO₂ emissions and shape the future of logistics with respect for both the environment and the local community. Earlier this year, Port of Kalundborg electrified its container cranes, with further initiatives underway.

“We have great confidence in Kalundborg’s development—thanks to its strategic location and the strong, solution-oriented collaboration with the port. Extending our presence until 2043 sends a clear signal of our long-term commitment. We see Kalundborg as one of Denmark’s most promising locations for combining efficiency with sustainability in future logistics,” says Mikael Gutman, CEO of APM Terminals Nordics.

A Partnership in Progress

Since the terminal’s establishment, Port of Kalundborg and APM Terminals have expanded the site and strengthened container-handling infrastructure with modern facilities, including customs and veterinary inspection. In May 2025, the terminal achieved global recognition for productivity, setting a world record for efficiency among all APM Terminals locations using mobile cranes.

With the contract extension, both parties commit to maintaining and developing Kalundborg as a vital hub for container traffic—and as a responsible partner to customers, collaborators, and the local community.
