Rainbow container brings diversity, equity and inclusion message to Costa Rica

The Maersk rainbow container disembarked on November 22 at the Moín Container Terminal (TCM) as part of its tour around The Americas. Its purpose is to raise awareness and reaffirm the company's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

The goal of this Maersk container is to support, respect and value differences, regardless of race, gender, gender expression, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion or people with disabilities.

To mark the arrival of the Rainbow Container, talks were scheduled on the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in the work environment. Photo sessions and awareness days were organised to promote these issues.

On November 24, the TCM team dressed up to bring together APM Terminals’ clients and partners, in activities that reinforced the message that each person is welcome regardless of their sexual orientation, lifestyle, ethnicity, gender or academic achievements. At APM Terminals the effort of each talent is important and a key part of the success of this great company, where people have the opportunity to grow and develop equitably with the support of their leaders.

Víctor Konen, Commercial Director at APM Terminals Moín, stated that: “We could not miss the opportunity to have the Rainbow Container in Costa Rica. One of the great initiatives of the Maersk group is to promote an inclusive culture, which includes valuing the diversity of thought, talent and abilities. So we wanted to bring communities together to celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion and take time to assess what else we could do to take this to the next level. Diversity makes us stronger and more resilient!”

“Discrimination prevents people from developing their full potential, creates inequality and less stable and prosperous societies. We also need diversity of thought to continue to improve and develop our business. Facilitate a culture in which everyone feels comfortable, respected and treated fairly, which is essential to achieve our goal of providing quality service to our customers and integrate the world improving everyone's lives,” said Diego Vega, Manager of Customer Excellence.

Origins of the Rainbow Container

In July 2020, two containers - painted in rainbow colours - joined the Maersk fleet. On March 11, 2021, they embarked on a World Tour. The rainbow containers began their journey on the Maersk Edmonton at APM Terminals Pier 400 in Los Angeles and continued to Yokohama. Japan, stopping at various locations in Asia and Europe, before ending the tour in Denmark for Copenhagen Pride 2021.

In 2022, seventeen functional containers were added to the fleet and are on tour around the world. Partners, clients, and the general public can sign and share their messages for a future of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
