APM Terminals Pecém renews operating license through 2049
APM Terminals Pecém Renews Operating License Through 2049 and Announces BRL 200 Million Investment in New Expansion Phase.
New STS crane, increased capacity, and reduced emissions mark a phase of sustainable growth at the terminal
APM Terminals Pecém has renewed its operating license for an additional 15 years, extending its operations at the Port of Pecém from 2034 to 2049. This new phase marks the beginning of a growth cycle focused on modernization, increased capacity, and emission reduction. With an investment of approximately BRL 200 million, APM Terminals reiterates their commitment to the economic and logistical development of the state of Ceará and the broader Northeast region of Brazil.
According to Daniel Rose, Managing Director of APM Terminals Suape and Pecém, the license renewal is the result of two years of ongoing planning and highlights the strong development of the operation. “Our partnership with the Pecém Complex and the State Government has been essential in enabling this new phase of sustainable expansion and job creation. The solid growth we've experienced since the start of operations and the positive outlook for the region’s logistics and industrial development were key factors in this decision,” he added.
As part of this new phase, the company will invest approximately BRL 200 million over the coming years in initiatives that include the acquisition of a fourth STS (ship-to-shore) crane and the replacement of diesel-powered equipment with six electric e-RTGs and electric trucks. These new assets will be installed in alignment with the progress of the Port of Pecém’s expansion works, which include the construction of a new 350-meter berth. The project, to be executed by the Pecém Complex, will extend the current container quay from 600 to 800 meters.
“With the new berth expected to be completed by the end of 2028 and the arrival of the new equipment, we anticipate expanded operations to begin by mid-2029. These improvements will increase APM Terminals Pecém’s handling capacity from 650,000 to 850,000 TEUs,” said Daniel Rose.
“Additionally, replacing our current fleet is a significant step toward our company’s sustainability goals and will contribute to a 70% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030,” he concluded.
