From trainee to captain: Liberia’s first marine pilot advances under APM Terminals training programme
Meet Captain Sam Jabbah from APM Terminals Monrovia
From starting as a seaman to becoming Liberia’s first marine pilot, Captain Sam Jabbah has not only navigated ships but also carved a pioneering path for the country’s maritime sector.
As part of APM Terminals Liberia’s “Leaders of the Future” programme, Jabbah has received world-class training across Ghana, South Africa, the US and Spain. Today, he plays a vital role at the Freeport of Monrovia, berthing and unberthing vessels to ensure smooth cargo operations – a critical task that directly supports Liberia’s economy and trade.
We spoke with him to learn more about his journey, what drives him and his hopes for the future of Liberia’s maritime talent.
It’s been a rewarding journey. Even though pilotage happens within the port, I still feel connected to the sea, and it’s where my passion lies.
What’s most fulfilling is knowing I’m part of something bigger and contributing to Liberia’s economic growth.
Working in multicultural environments really shaped me. Adapting to different people, systems and cultures have strengthened my resilience and helped me develop professionally and personally.
It means everything – it's a privilege to contribute in such a meaningful way at a critical time.
I’ve always believed that opportunities come to those who are prepared.
Each country added a unique layer to my development. The variety of training has made me more adaptable and multidisciplinary in my approach to maritime operations.
It depends on vessel traffic and pilot scheduling. I often start as early as 4am and work until the evening.
My responsibilities include ensuring safe navigation at anchorage and overseeing cargo operations at berths – all to keep things running smoothly for both our customers and the country.
I love seeing the real-world impact of our work. Even if it’s behind the scenes, I know that when essential goods are available in the market, it’s partly because of what we do at the port.
I want to expand my expertise in harbor management, vessel traffic systems and advanced ship handling. These areas will make me a more effective pilot and prepare me for the challenges ahead.
That programme laid the foundation for everything. It equipped me with the mindset, tools and confidence to pursue this journey. I wouldn’t be here without it.
They’re essential, because when you invest in people’s skills and mindset, you’re investing in the nation.
These programmes aren’t just about individual careers – they’re about the future of Liberia.
Take it seriously. It’s not easy – there will be challenges and frustrations. But if you stay humble, respectful and committed, it’s worth it.
Respect, humility, dedication and a willingness to learn. Those are the qualities that help you grow and earn the trust and responsibility that this profession demands.
