Prepared to protect: APM Terminals Elizabeth builds readiness through partnerships
At APM Terminals Elizabeth, safety is built through preparation — and strengthened through partnership.

As part of its ongoing safety journey, the terminal routinely hosts training drills with first responders such as the Port Authority Police Department, the City of Elizabeth Fire Department and other government agencies. These hands-on training days give first responders the chance to navigate the terminal environment, simulating high-risk scenarios such as crane rescues and medical emergencies at height.
“The value that our guys get out of this is when they do have a real emergency up here, this isn't going to be their first time,” said Sgt. Sandgran of the Port Authority Police. “They already know the layout so they can plan out how they’re going to get the victim down as fast and as safe as possible.”
For APM Terminals, staying ahead of risk means recognizing the complex nature of daily operations — and making sure everyone is ready. With heavy equipment, vessel activity, and constantly changing conditions, training is essential. Being familiar with the terminal environment equips first responders with the first-hand experience they need to navigate the complex marine terminal facility.
“We work in a high-risk environment,” said Delarosa, HSSE Manager at APM Terminals Elizabeth. “Training helps us and our partners stay ready and aligned.”
In the event of an actual emergency, the Port Authority is notified immediately by the terminal’s 24/7 security team and emergency personnel can be on-site in minutes. Regular drills ensure that everyone — from terminal operators to first responders — knows the plan and can act quickly.

These exercises are more than compliance — they reflect APM Terminals’ proactive mindset and commitment to continuous improvement. Each session helps fine-tune critical skills, reinforce communication protocols, and build stronger bonds with the emergency teams that protect the terminal and community alike.
