APM Terminals Poti and Biodiesel Georgia Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Advance Green Operations
APM Terminals Poti has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Biodiesel Georgia LLC, marking the start of a joint initiative aimed at reducing the port’s carbon footprint through the use of biodiesel.
Under the MoU, APM Terminals Poti plans to purchase biodiesel from the company to blend with mineral diesel currently used in its machinery. The agreement outlines a commitment to measure and maximize environmental benefits, including engaging a qualified carbon expert to calculate CO₂ emissions savings and establish a standardized methodology for monitoring reductions in accordance with the GHG Protocol.
Using biodiesel instead of mineral diesel (petroleum-based diesel) can lead to significant reductions in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, while burning 1 ton of conventional (mineral) diesel Fuel, 2.68 tons of CO2 are emitted into the atmosphere, and using B100 biodiesel instead of mineral diesel fuel can significantly, by 85-90% reduce this harmful emission.
In parallel, both parties will explore the technical and operational requirements needed to safely receive, store, and blend biodiesel at the port. Biodiesel Georgia LLC will contribute its expertise and support to ensure compliance with quality standards and to design efficient fuel handling processes.
"Sustainability is at the core of our business strategy,” said Christian Roeder, Managing Director of APM Terminals Poti. "This partnership allows us to take practical steps toward reducing our carbon footprint while supporting the development of local renewable energy solutions."
“Our company welcomes and highly values APM Terminals Poti’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its proactive policy toward green transformation, particularly the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In support of these efforts, Biodiesel Georgia LLC stands ready to deliver high-quality, renewable, and environmentally friendly fuel - biodiesel, enabling a gradual substitution of conventional diesel fuel with blended biodiesel in the equipment and machinery of our partner company”. - Murman Pataraia, the Managing Partner of Biodiesel Georgia LLC, says.
