APM Terminals Yucatán advances decarbonisation with first fully electric reach stacker

APM Terminals Yucatán is advancing port electrification in Progreso with the addition of its first 100% electric reach stacker.

The reach stacker is part of the terminal modernization plan, which includes new technologies, electrical infrastructure and equipment aimed at strengthening operational efficiency.

With this addition, APM Terminals Yucatán is positioning Progreso at the forefront of port electrification in the region: the equipment is one of the first of its kind in the Gulf of Mexico and the first in Yucatán.

APM Terminals Yucatán will incorporate its first 100% electric reach stacker for container handling, with a lifting capacity of up to 45 tonnes and the ability to stack containers up to five high. The equipment represents another step forward in the terminal’s decarbonization strategy through the electrification of operations and the use of renewable energy. Compared with an equivalent diesel-powered unit, it is estimated that the equipment could avoid approximately 125 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.

The addition of this equipment forms part of the modernization plan for the Yucatán container terminal, which is designed to strengthen infrastructure, technology and capacity, enhance operational efficiency and prepare the terminal for sustainable long-term growth, while supporting the development of increasingly technical skills for day-to-day operations.

As part of APM Terminals Yucatán’s strategy to decarbonize its operations, the terminal is also developing fast-charging infrastructure for electric equipment, increasing its contracted electrical capacity, modernizing substations and electrical infrastructure, introducing new LED technology for container yard lighting, and planning the addition of two new hybrid mobile harbour cranes (MHCs).

Víctor Konen, Managing Director of APM Terminals Yucatán , said: “The modernization of our terminal represents an opportunity to transform the way we operate while contributing to a vision of sustainable growth for Yucatán and its community. The introduction of electric technology and new infrastructure enables us to improve operational efficiency and strengthen the competitiveness of Puerto Progreso, positioning it as a strategic logistics hub for the region and a driver of economic development for the state.”

Earlier this year, the terminal was selected as one of three pilot terminals worldwide to implement new electrification solutions.

Reach stacker technology

The reach stacker features 100% electric technology, a lifting capacity of up to 45 tonnes and the ability to stack containers up to five high. It is equipped with a 507 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, an estimated operating range of 8 to 10 hours, and a CCS1 charging system that allows the battery to be fully charged in approximately 90 minutes. The equipment can reach a maximum speed of 25 km/h and incorporates advanced monitoring and electrical safety systems.
