Citizens chose names for cranes arriving at the Rijeka Gateway Terminal

Rijeka Gateway, the company that manages the new container terminal on the Zagreb coast, has named its four new cranes, which will soon be installed on the future "Square of Strong Women" in the City of Rijeka. During the last two weeks, citizens had the opportunity to choose between nine women who have left an indelible mark on Rijeka and its surroundings with their work.

As voting concluded, most votes were won by Antonija Reljac, the symbol of the Grobnik milkmaids, Zora Matijević, a teacher who became a heroine of the Second World War, Ada Felice Rošić, the bearer of the post-war reconstruction of Rijeka, and Snježana Pejčić, the first Croatian medalist at the Summer Olympics.

"The Square of Strong Women" in the City of Rijeka will be a permanent symbol of the strength of women from past and present and their contribution to Rijeka. This project clearly underlines our commitment to the community and environmental protection and symbolises our determination to promote equality and inspiration for future generations", said Tomislav Žunić, CFO of Rijeka Gateway.

The Square of Strong Women in the City of Rijeka will become a special part of the terminal, located between the Rijeka Gateway cranes, the largest port cranes that will be installed at any of the terminals of the Port of Rijeka. Due to security reasons and because it is a port area, the Square will not be accessible to citizens, but Rijeka Gateway will regularly organize guided tours of the new symbol of strong women from Rijeka's past and present.

One of the cranes will be named after Snježana Pejčić, a Croatian shooter who became known to the general Croatian public when she won a bronze medal in the ten-meter air rifle discipline at the Beijing Olympics. It was the first Croatian medal at the Beijing Olympics, so Snježana went down in history as the first Croatian athlete to win a medal at the Summer Olympics.

"I am honored to be selected in the company of such important women, for whom I believe that their contribution is indebted to Rijeka and the surrounding region in various ways. This recognition belongs not only to me, but also to all women who fight for a better society every day. A big thank you to Rijeka Gateway for including me in the selection and to all voters", said Pejčić.

The Rijeka Gateway terminal, with an investment of EUR 380 million, brings significant economic benefits to Rijeka and its surroundings, including the creation of new jobs and business opportunities. As the most modern remotely controlled container terminal in Europe, it will use advanced technology and international standards, strengthening Croatia's connection with world markets.

With a minimal carbon footprint and maximum energy efficiency, as much as 95 percent of the equipment at the terminal will be electric, powered exclusively from renewable sources. Advanced water, lighting and noise management systems ensure minimal impact on the environment and the local community.
