Gateway to Success: mentoring Croatia's young professionals

A second cycle of the Gateway to Success mentorship program — an innovative initiative by Rijeka Gateway — was introduced at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka. The program aims to connect students with experienced professionals from the business sector, empowering young people in their professional development and providing valuable insights into the business world.

The launch presentation attracted a large number of students and academic staff, with organizers emphasizing that this cycle reflects Rijeka Gateway's ongoing commitment to education and the community.

"We want to offer students an experience that prepares them for the challenges of the labor market while providing support and motivation for further development. This is not just about education but also about creating valuable professional connections," said Ana Iskra, People Partner at Rijeka Gateway.

Tailored to success

The program consists of four structured phases, focusing on an individualized approach tailored to each participant's professional needs and goals. Over four sessions, students will have the opportunity to meet mentors, set personal goals, participate in mock job interviews, and analyse the knowledge they’ve gained.

"The collaboration with Rijeka Gateway brings tremendous value to our students. Through this program, they not only get the chance to learn from top experts but also gain a deeper understanding of how an industry vital to our region operates. This is an example of a partnership that has a long-term impact on our community," stated Ana Perić Hadžić, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Maritime Studies, University of Rijeka.

Onsite experience

The program concludes with a visit to the Rijeka Gateway terminal, where students will have the unique opportunity to see operational processes firsthand. Beyond supporting student development, the program has a broader societal impact by encouraging young talent to stay in Croatia and strengthening ties between the academic and business sectors.

Rijeka Gateway is the largest project in Croatia's transport sector, investing €380 million in the most modern, remotely operated container terminal in this part of Europe. It will directly create 300 jobs for professionals across various fields. Through this project, Rijeka Gateway reaffirms its dedication to community development and youth empowerment, setting a benchmark for socially responsible business practices.
