APM Terminals in Egypt celebrates 2.2 million TEU-expansion
The Suez Canal Container Terminal (SCCT) in Egypt marked the inauguration of its major expansion, adding new capacity and jobs to East Port Said. The ceremony, attended by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, marked the official opening of the USD 500 million terminal upgrade.
The expansion adds 955 metres of new quay and 510,000 m² of yard space, supported by 12 quay cranes, 30 electric RTGs, and more than 90 trucks. This upgrade increases capacity by 2.2 million TEUs annually, raising SCCT’s total capacity to 7 million TEUs - further strengthening Egypt’s role as a leading global trade and logistics hub.
Sustainability was central to the project, with the deployment of electric RTGs underscoring APM Terminals’ commitment to reducing emissions. Through investments in battery-electric container handling equipment, renewable energy, and enhanced energy efficiency, the company continues to make significant progress toward its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2040.
Beyond infrastructure, the expansion is generating over 1,000 new jobs and supporting long-term economic growth.
“It is with great pleasure that we celebrate our commitment to Egypt, our partnerships and the dedicate people delivering excellence every day at this terminal,” said Lars Mikael Jensen, Head of Hubs and Ocean Collaboration, APM Terminals. “SCCT provides world-class operations and is a central part of our global network”.
Keld Mosgaard Christensen, Managing Director of SCCT, said: “We extend our sincere gratitude to His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, as well as to the distinguished ministers, authorities, and partners whose support has made this achievement possible. This expansion will further strengthen Egypt’s and the region’s trade opportunities, and with today’s celebration, we reaffirm our vision and commitment to shaping the future of global trade together.
Strategic hub for a resilient network
SCCT is one of eight specially selected APM Terminals hub terminals forming the backbone for the East-West network by A. P. Moller – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. The network was designed to ensure schedule reliability, competitive transit times and resilient operations with fewer stops, and exceptional terminal performance.
Investments in the terminal have been instrumental in delivering these goals - providing additional capacity for rapid transshipment and enabling advanced digital planning tools, such as the implementation of digital twins.
According to the latest Container Port Performance Index by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, Port Said and SCCT ranked as the 3rd most efficient container port globally and 1st in the region in 2024. This recognition highlights the value of continued investment in efficiency, digitalisation, and sustainable growth - and, above all, the dedication of the team behind the terminal.
