APM Terminals Apapa, Nigeria’s largest container terminal operator, has introduced a daily laundry service onsite to care for the protective clothing worn by frontline workers. Besides washing, drying and ironing the protective clothing, the laundry service is also equipped with a tagging machine for easy identification of employee clothing and a sewing machine to mend the coveralls where needed.

Constant Care is one of the companies five Core Values; take care of today and actively prepare for tomorrow. This not only applies to customers’ needs and businesses but also to the employees and the equipment used to meet these needs. “With this initiative, we aim to support our colleagues in taking good care of their protective clothing without being a burden to them,” commented Terminal Manager, Steen Knudsen. “This will save our employees valuable time and energy.”

“Our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and Procurement teams worked closely together to ensure the laundry service follows washing guidelines provided by the manufacturers to preserve the integrity of the Personal Protective Equipment.”

The terminal has trained many of its employees in APM Terminals global approach to identifying areas of continuous improvement and opportunities to increase efficiency. “We will continue to make deliberate investments in the training and development of our people, as the goal is to have an organisation that can truly deliver services of international standards to our stakeholders,” added Knudsen.
