Shore power coming to APM Terminals Aarhus

A new step to support cleaner, quieter and more efficient port calls

Port of Aarhus is progressing with the installation of shore power at the container terminal. Once completed, the new facility will allow container vessels calling APM Terminals Aarhus to switch off their diesel generators during port stays and draw electricity directly from shore. With commissioning planned for late 2026, the installation will be among the most advanced shore power solutions for container vessels in Europe.

For shipping lines calling APM Terminals Aarhus, this development offers meaningful gains in operational efficiency and sustainability performance.

Clear benefits for shipping lines

Shore power enables vessels to shut down onboard diesel generators while at quay. This removes local emissions, vibration and noise, creating a cleaner and more comfortable working environment. It also provides a stable electricity supply for essential onboard systems including navigation equipment, communication technology, reefer containers, lighting and heating.

Offering shore power is a natural next step in supporting our customers’ decarbonisation ambitions. By enabling vessels to plug in during operations, CO₂ emissions are reduced, working conditions are improved and a more efficient, future‑ready port experience is supported,” says Helle Almind, Commercial Manager, APM Terminals Aarhus.

Daniel Møller Jensen, Head of Corporate Affairs & Communications at Port of Aarhus adds: “Shore power for container ships is a crucial part of our journey towards creating a more sustainable port for the future. As Denmark’s largest commercial port, where the vast majority of the country’s container cargo passes through, it is also an important step for our competitiveness and the green transition that we establish Denmark’s first shore power facility for container vessels.”

What vessels need to connect

Most modern container vessels already have high‑voltage shore connection systems installed. Others may require a retrofit, depending on vessel size and onboard power configuration. The upcoming Aarhus facility is designed with flexibility in mind to accommodate a wide range of vessel types and connection needs.

Timeline and installation work

Construction for the shore power facility is planned between week 11 and week 41 in 2026. During this period, Port of Aarhus will manage adjustments on the quay. Some minor operational impacts may occur and will be communicated in advance to support customers’ planning. Once operational, the facility will enable fast and safe connection, making decarbonised port calls the new standard in Aarhus.
