Capacity-boosting investments with the customer in focus

To meet the growing market demand, APM Terminals Gothenburg is investing in several capacity-enhancing initiatives. The goal is to create even better conditions for Swedish import and export companies.

Equipment fleet 10% larger

During the summer of 2025, four new straddle carriers arrived at APM Terminals. Shipped by vessel from Wilhelmshaven, these machines increase the equipment fleet by 10%.

"The new machines are currently being adapted to our operations and are expected to be in service at the beginning of November. They will give us better capacity to handle volume peaks," says Jasmin Mujdzic, Operations Manager at APM Terminals Gothenburg.

New external empty container yard in operation

The new 10,000-square-meter empty container yard is now operational. Using an external yard saves valuable space within the terminal, which can instead be used for loaded import and export containers.

"This solution is expected to increase our yard capacity and contribute to smoother flows inside the terminal. Some trucks can now pick up and drop off containers outside the terminal, reducing congestion inside. With the expanded empty container yard, we are also better equipped to handle seasonal fluctuations," says Per Wahlström, Market Analyst at APM Terminals Gothenburg.

Increased rail capacity

Ahead of the 2026 rail schedule, APM Terminals has received a record number of applications – both for entirely new destinations and for additional departures on existing routes.

"We have prepared for growing demand throughout the year. Among other measures, we have implemented a two-shift system on Sundays and added an extra night shift between Friday and Saturday, creating a buffer to enable growth. At the same time, we have invested heavily in training to ensure the right skills and staffing. We are now well positioned to take full advantage of the positive developments on the rail side," says Emil Seferaj, Sales Executive for APM Terminals’ rail customers.
