Supporting the shift to zero-emission transport: fully automated priority service for electric trucks
To support the transition to zero-emission transport, APM Terminals introduced a priority service for electric trucks as early as 2023. The solution has now been taken a step further and is fully automated.
The number of electric trucks visiting the terminal has doubled since 2023. To keep up with this development and make it even easier for carriers investing in electrification, APM Terminals has launched a fully automated prioritization system.
"Of our approximately 1,000 daily truck visits, 12% are now electric – a positive development we are keen to promote. The solution has been developed in close collaboration with our customers," says Emma Klofsten Tendell, Customer Care Manager at APM Terminals Gothenburg.
"I think the solution is fantastic – it provides yet another important advantage of using carbon-free transport. Electrifying container transport on the road requires initiative, and this is a great example of that. APM Terminals’ initiative contributes to more efficient transport, helping us keep costs down and increase customer satisfaction. Since we started running our transports through APM Terminals, everything has worked very well – and now it’s getting even better," says Jesper Persson of Perssons Åkeri in Svenljunga AB.
Emma Andersson from Skaraslättens Transport AB adds: "As part of our work towards a more environmentally friendly fleet, we greatly welcome the adjustments for electric trucks. It gives us both the opportunity and motivation to optimize our transport operations while supporting the demand for fully electric transport."
How the prioritization solution works
The new system is fully integrated into the regular gate-in process, which means:
- Prioritization is registered automatically upon arrival.
- Electric trucks gain access to a dedicated lane with direct access to the service area.
- Our machine operators automatically receive information that the visit should be prioritized.
