Rijeka Gateway Marks International Day for Women in Maritime with Visit by Female Students from the Faculty of Maritime Studies

On the occasion of the International Day for Women in Maritime, celebrated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Rijeka Gateway organised a working visit for female students from the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka. During the visit, the future young professionals had the opportunity to meet and exchange experiences with Rijeka Gateway’s female employees and learn more about career development opportunities within the industry.

Rijeka Gateway has opened a wide range of new career opportunities for students of maritime professions, and the company currently employs a total of 75 women. Women are represented across all key operational and professional areas of the terminal – from gate positions, truck drivers, and operators of eRTG, eRMG and STS cranes, to dispatchers and dynamic terminal planners. The company also has a female Commercial Director. Of the total number of women employed, 50.7 per cent work in operational and technical roles, while 49.3 per cent are employed in administrative and support functions.

Through discussions with Rijeka Gateway employees, the students gained insight into the key positions and processes at the terminal, which is among the most technologically advanced terminals in the wider region.

“Rijeka Gateway has created a new range of career opportunities for students pursuing maritime professions in Croatia. From day one, the company has maintained an open approach to employing female professionals, which is best demonstrated by the fact that I myself was the terminal’s very first employee during its project phase. I am proud that this project, in which I have been involved from the very beginning, has laid strong foundations for a new wave of development in terminal and broader logistics operations across the Rijeka area, and that the young professionals we had the pleasure of meeting today will also play a part in its future,” said Maja Borčić, Commercial Director of Rijeka Gateway.

“The visit to the Rijeka Gateway terminal was a very useful and inspiring experience for me. We see the terminal from the city every day and learn about it at university, but it is completely different when you can experience the entire process up close. I found it especially interesting to hear the experiences of terminal employees working in different positions, who explained in an approachable way what it is like to work at a modern container terminal. The visit gave us a better insight into the real operations of the industry and the opportunities that a project like this can offer to young professionals.”, said Ema Budimir, a second-year student at the Faculty of Maritime Studies, during the terminal visit.
