Rijeka Gateway supports Fiumanka festival for third year
Rijeka Gateway is once again supporting Fiumanka, an event that has established itself over the years as a recognisable sporting and cultural symbol of the City of Rijeka. For the third consecutive year, we are a partner of this manifestation, which promotes maritime tradition, sustainability, and community spirit.
Under the patronage of Rijeka Gateway, the 7th Paper Fiumanka was also held – a unique event that brings together the youngest sea and sailing enthusiasts on the eve of the main regatta. This year’s edition gathered around one hundred children from the Centre for Education and Training, Nikola Tesla Primary School, Dolac Primary School, Brajda Primary School, the Edukido group, and the Veseli vrtuljak choir.
The children of Rijeka created their own boats from paper and recycled materials and symbolically took part in their own small regatta, demonstrating how much creativity, imagination, and team spirit can fit into a single paper boat. Through this activity, they also learned about the importance of protecting the sea and the environment. After the regatta, EM spheres were released into the sea, contributing to a cleaner marine ecosystem.
A particularly exciting part of the day was a boat trip through the Port of Rijeka, during which the children sailed all the way to the Rijeka Gateway terminal. There, they had the opportunity to see the iconic large blue cranes up close and learn more about how modern port infrastructure operates. The harbour cruise offered them a unique perspective on maritime life in Rijeka and an insight into one of the most advanced container terminals in the region.
Rijeka Gateway has been supporting Fiumanka since the period when the terminal was still under construction, before the start of its operational phase. This year, the partnership gains additional significance as the main race of the 27th Fiumanka will start in front of the terminal, bringing together a large number of sailing boats and participants.
“Fiumanka is undoubtedly much more than a sporting event – it is one of the defining symbols of the City of Rijeka, promoting sustainability and highlighting the city’s maritime identity. Rijeka Gateway, on the other hand, is one of the largest investments in logistics infrastructure in Croatia and a project that has placed Rijeka back on Europe’s logistics map. It is also a project in which sustainability and environmental protection are deeply embedded in its core operations. Fiumanka and Rijeka Gateway are therefore natural partners,” said Maja Borčić, Chief Commercial Officer of Rijeka Gateway.
Rijeka Gateway’s continued support for Fiumanka reflects its commitment to actively contributing to the development of the local community and supporting initiatives that promote maritime tradition, sustainability, education, and community spirit.
Fiumanka is one of the Adriatic’s most recognisable sailing events and a key moment in Rijeka’s annual calendar. Combining competitive regattas with cultural programming, it turns the port and waterfront into a hub for sport, tourism and community activity, while promoting the region internationally as a maritime destination.
